If you were to Google Frau Perchta, you would most likely come across monikers such as "The Christmas Hag" or "The Belly Splitter". She has become an entity akin to Krampus, a punisher of naughty children and "lazy" women, but she was once known as a great protector. The White Lady, associated with the beautiful birch trees, watched over the forest and the animals. She was known as a guide to the afterlife, caring for the children who pass in infancy.
The church didn't approve of the belief in such a being and used their influence to demonize her. She became a fear tactic, a scary story to make sure children behaved, and women remained good housekeepers. Many traditions have been carried out over the years in her honor, some holding fast to her origin, others leaning more into her modern depictions. I wanted to create images that showed her as the light she was to many in a time when the world felt dark. Infant mortality was high, and it gave women peace to know someone was there to carry their children into the next life. . This beautiful hood was a lucky find from @revolver_fargo
